DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

My intention was to create a beautiful, enchanting, engaging and touching animal movie for children everywhere.

On the one hand we needed to capture animal action and interaction in a very unique way, and on the other we needed to connect with the universal psychology of young people.
Many of the animals we see in the movie (baby elephants, baby giraffe, chimp, lion cub etc) we have all seen before. However, we rarely see animals from one species interact with others of another species.

Imagine a chimp holding on to the trunk of an elephant, or a lion cub being hugged by a chimp, or a chimp kissing a giraffe. That’s the sort of action we went for in a natural, untrained and spontaneous way.

All kids fear losing their parents. Sadly some do so through extraordinary circumstances. Also, unfortunately, many other children feel that they “lose” a part of their parents when their parents separate or divorce. How does a child find strength in these situations? What does family mean? How do they adjust their idea of family? What really is a family?

The greatest of family movies touch something that is very deep within our psychology and humanity.
On the one hand Elephant Tales is a cute and charming animal movie.

On the other, Elephant Tales is a story of helpless children in a world full of uncertainty, danger and terror. It is a story of friendships, caring for one another and the miracle of believing in the impossible.

This story is about helpless children that come together in a cruel world, and with the belief in finding hope at the end of an illusory rainbow, they journey against all odds. This is a story for all young people in the modern world, to help in some small way to understand and make sense of confusing and uncertain times.

Elephant Tales draws on the genre of the Aesop’s Fables mixed with the entertainment of modern cinema. It is intended to take everyone on an emotional adventure, to touch both children and “the child within”. Even as adults we often feel innocent and vulnerable against international forces that seem so much out of our control. The Elephant Tales journey concludes with an uplifting emotional climax creating a sense of affirmation in life and ourselves, and the importance of our human relationship with the natural world.
